Spain are the justified favourites heading into this competition. Their 6-0 demolition of Poland on Tuesday night was just another indication of the beautiful, devastatingly fluent football being produced by the greatest Spanish national team of all time. The current European champions have the quality, belief and momentum to become the first European team to win the World Cup outside of Europe and, if not them, England, Germany, Holland, Portugal, France and holders Italy will all be pressing their claim this year.
Realistically, the only two teams standing in their way are Brazil and Argentina and, while Dunga has moulded a well-balanced team who qualified top of the South American classification with ease, it is Diego Maradona's team whom I urge anyone to keep an eye on. For one simple reason: Lionel Messi. Not since Ronaldo in 1998 has there been so much expected of one individual at this tournament. Ronaldo spectacularly faltered - albeit in difficult circumstances - in the final against France in Paris that year. This time around there is perhaps even more pressure on Messi's shoulders. He is potentially the greatest footballer not only of this but of any generation but he will not receive the recognition he might or might not crave until he guides Argentina to World Cup glory. Every big team has at least one standout player to keep an eye on, but the explosive Barcelona maestro is il capo di tutti capi.
On a more general note, I am expecting a lot of spectacular goals. There have been numerous complaints about the Adidas Jabulani, with goalkeepers particularly concerned about the unpredictable flight of the ball. Among them, Chile stopper Claudio Bravo has claimed the ball is designed "to prejudice goalkeepers", which, as far as the neutral spectator is concerned, is excellent news. Jabulani is Zulu for "rejoice" and hopefully we'll be celebrating more wonder strikes than ever before in 2010.
Tengo muchas ganas de ver jugar a la Chile de Marcelo "el Loco"Bielsa. Más de una década después de la cúspide de Ivan Zamorano y Marcelo Salas, Chile vuelve a tener un ataque muy potente. No sólo por el ya mencionado Alexis Sánchez. Ojo, que Matías Fernández i Mark González se transforman cuando visten la malla de su país. Además Bielsa ha convertido a Chile en un equipo muy rápido, con unas bandas muy creativas y con goles que te llueven de todas partes. Ha adaptado a su estilo a muchos de los jugadores que quedaron 3ros en el sub 20 de 2007.
ReplyDeleteEl entrenador, por eso, también ha madurado mucho desde 2002 y la presión por entrenar a Chile no es la misma que la de entrenar a la selección Albi celeste. En Corea y Japón, bajo mi punto de vista falló en no alinear juntos a dos Killers como Bati y Crespo. Pero es un gran estudioso del futbol y no cometerá los mismos errores. Estudia a sus rivales como nadie, y además su selección no tiene nada que perder. Creo que deberían pasar la fase de grupos sin problemas (con permiso de Suiza, que es un equipo muy consistente). Sino es así será en gran parte a la más que posible baja de "Chupete Suazo".
Será una pena si se cruzan con Brasil en octavos, pero creo que le darán muchos problemas a Julio César.
Sólo con que mantengan el nivel que exhibieron en la fase de clasificación nos harán disfrutar de lo lindo. Los que nos quedamos varias madrugadas viendo esos partidos sabemos muy bien de que estoy hablando.
14 horas y el mundo dejará de girar (o por lo menos lo hará más despacio).
Bien dicho, Andreu. Yo tambien tengo muchas ganas de ver al Chile de Bielsa. Qualquier tecnico que da tantos oportunidades a los jovenes como el merece nuestra atencion. Espero que veamos algo de Fabian Orellana tambien. Ha crecido mucho esta temporada en el Xerez. Es muy tecnico, muy directo - siempre busca gol.
ReplyDeleteHola Simon... muy bueno este blog, hay que alimentarlo! ya tengo Sky instalado para ver todos los partidos del mundial en HD! a ver si Italia no me hace sufrir tanto como la Juve! Sentiremos la ausencia de Pirlo, y la falta casi absoluta de calidad... pero Italia y Lippi son muy duros a morir asì que siempre hay esperanza.
